Close to His Heart

Devotionals by Ellen G. Coyle

About Ellen

Twenty years ago, I was a woman I don’t recognize anymore.

We had lost a child. The grief was so consuming, so isolating, that I couldn’t see anything else, not my husband, not my other children, not God. I was so focused on my own pain that I was destroying the family I still had. My marriage was falling apart. Separation felt inevitable.

I wasn’t raised in faith. I didn’t have a church home or a prayer life to fall back on. But in my desperation, I cried out to Jesus. Not because I knew Him, but because I had nowhere else to go.

And He met me there.

What followed was the slowest, most tender healing. Jesus taught me to forgive myself for being human, for failing, for grieving wrong. He showed me how to look at my husband again, really look at him, not through the lens of my own brokenness. He restored our marriage in ways I thought were impossible.

That transformation is the reason I write. I know what it feels like to be lost in darkness, to believe happiness is impossible, to think God could never want someone like me. But I also know the grace of being found. I know what it looks like when Jesus heals a broken heart, a broken family, a broken life.

These devotionals are for the women still in that darkness, the ones who think they’ve gone too far, hurt too deeply, lost too much. You haven’t. There is healing waiting for you.

I’m walking proof of that.
